Panama is Concerned about Honduras

The Panamanian Government is holding expectations concerning the situation in Honduras. Juan Carlos Varela’s administration after the position of the Honduran Supreme Electoral Court that granted the advantage to the candidate for re-election, Juan Orlando Hernández, in the special vote counting. The statement of the Panamanian Foreign Ministry urges to guarantee a transparent process and also, “calls on the population and the political force to keep calm and promote social peace and tranquility in the country”.

From the Isthmus the Democratic Revolutionary Party expressed its position. The Executive Committee of the political organization described the result issued by the Honduran Electoral Supreme Court as an “outrageous electoral fraud”. The communiqué dated December 4 reads as follows: “... the polls concluded with evident vices showing that a fraud was carried out against the main candidate of the opposition”.

 European observers

The European Union election observation mission present in Honduras requested that no winner be declared until the end of the process, including the stage of challenges. In a press conference, Marisa Matías, head of the mission said: “We think it is too early to announce winners as long as the process is not over. Flexibility is necessary so that the parties can file challenges”.

The tension in Honduras continues

The special vote counting that gave the victory to the candidate for re-election caused a series of reactions, including the refusal by the opposition candidate Salvador Nasralla.
