Twelve social, educational and artistic projects were awarded today by a special fund from the capital city government, which called for a contest in the framework of the 500th anniversary of Panama City to be held on August 15, 2019.

The award-winning projects will receive a total of about $ 250,000, the Mayor's Office of Panama announced on Monday, which together with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) created the "Panama City 500 Years Fund" as a financing mechanism to promote the execution of projects that contribute to commemorate the event.

The goal of the Fund "is to promote citizen projects from several areas of knowledge, imagination and creativity, to collectively and in a plural way commemorate the 500th anniversary of Panama City,” the Mayor’s Office said in a statement.

The twelve projects selected, which were chosen from among 42 proposals, include an initiative to "recover the historical memory of three communities of Panama City, with the participation of children and youth in a joint research and creation process, for a collective performance".

Also, one of the projects included is a participative video production workshop with young and old people to recover the memory of Casco Antiguo, as well as a documentary about a legendary vinyl record store called Panama Radio that was located at the Plaza 5 de Mayo and was a meeting place for musicians in the 1960s and 1970s.

A research on the cultural wealth of the Tambo jazz, and a project for the design and community construction of a transitory space of multiple use for workshops of film appreciation, curatorship, photography and community management were also awarded, according to the official information.
