Minister of Health Miguel Mayo has confirmed approximately 5,000 new cases of dengue, which represents a significant increase compared to 2016. The minister added that despite the number of people affected, only one person died. Last year, Dengue killed 11 people.

Mayo explained that prevention is the best way to fight dengue. He also urged to avoid breeding mosquitoes, which also contributes to the mosquito that spreads Zika and Chikungunya.

Panama and Colón are the cities with the most registered cases.

Yanina Rodríguez, head of health promotion in the San Miguelito Regional, also calls for the elimination of mosquito breeding, since it is the only way to prevent this virus.

She warned that Dengue Type 3 is already in Panama and is spreading. This type of dengue is the most dangerous variant of the virus, because it is not detected by conventional laboratory tests.
