PANAMA CITY.- The president of the Publishing Group El Siglo and La Estrella (GESE), Eduardo Quirós, was elected as president of the Journalists' Forum by the Freedoms of Expression and Information.
Quirós said that from the post, which will take up office next May 4 for one year, he will stimulate the goals of the Forum, which are "to continue guarding, because in Panama it is widely respected the freedom of speech and the right of information".
The elected president of the Forum remembered that during the last year there have been "some complex situations" in the Central American country as for the freedoms of information, which have been overcomed thanks to the action of the organization.
There have been legislative offers in the National Assembly for "regulating the contents of the media, and the Forum has played an important role in order to avoid those situation” , he added.
In last March the Parliament, decided to file without discussing a polemic law project criticized and rejected by the journalistic unions for trying to regulate the publishing contents of the media, the exercise of the profession and the advertising guideline.
