Former Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli lived through Hurricane Irma in South Florida in the Miami jail where he awaits a decision on Panama's extradition request.

The spokesman of the former head of state, Luis Eduardo Camacho, explained that Martinelli was not evacuated from the federal prison in Miami where he has been held since June.

The Florida Correctional Department decided to evacuate numerous prisons, but local and federal authorities decided to leave the prisoners in their jails, and that of the former president of Panama was located in one of the most affected areas of the city.

Camacho explained that he does not believe that the former president realized what was going on outside the prison, since Martinelli wrote him after Irma's passage and did not comment on it.
