In 2015, Panama began the urban renewal of the city of Colón, the second most important city in Panama. The beginning of the work was one of the first orders starting the presidency of Juan Carlos Varela.
“We will make 5,000 new homes in Colon giving a new beginning to more than 25,000 colonists,” the president wrote on his Twitter account.
Draft bill 117, means by which the rules for the restoration of the historic center will be established, stipulates that the development of Colón will be under the administration of the Ministry of Housing and Land Management (MIVIOT). The MIVIOT has the power to supervise, administer and execute the actions that are necessary to complete the project.
During the ceremonial events in the framework of the patriotic festivities in Colon, the president said that on December 4 the first apartments will be granted and by the middle of the same month the first waterfront will be inaugurated, which will have several sports courts. He also predicted that the next commemorative parade will be in the renovated city of Colón.
Mario Etchelecu, the Minister of the MIVIOT, also announced that as of December 4, the first families will move to the renovated complex. The granting of apartments will be partial, 500 apartments every two months.
The renovation of Colón consists of the construction of the five thousand apartments that make up the Altos de los Lagos residential complex and will have a police sub-station, fire station, common areas, Community Information Centers (infoplaza), future areas for educational centers, medical care and social care, green and recreational areas.
