In a press release by Cambio Democratico Twitter account, Odebrecht's former financial operator Rodrigo Tacla Durán confirming his allegations against Panama's president Juan Carlos Varela, accusing him of being an accomplice in paying bribes by the Brazilian company in the isthmus.

"After my interview with the newspaper El País, I saw that my words were questioned and with a possible political interest in President Juan Carlos Varela, by the Attorney General’s Office of Panama, among other politicians, and by Odebrecht, which by press release tried to disqualify me, although I have never denied my statements," said a document published by Tacla Durán who is in exile in Spain.

In an interview published by a Spanish newspaper, Odebrecht's former financial operator stated that André Rabello, director of the subsidiary of the Brazilian company in Panama, noted that Varela told him that Panama would not answer the legal assistance required by Brazil on bribes paid by Odebrecht.

According to Tacla Durán, the construction company issued one million euros to two suppliers of Varela’s liquor company, through an HSBC account in Hong Kong.

In response to the statements, Odebrecht published on its official website that Rodrigo Tacla Durán "has never acted as a lawyer in any Odebrecht Group company and he was a financial operator that participated in illegal activities already informed by the company to the authorities."
