Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela has inaugurated the rehabilitation and expansion of the Santiago-David Pan-American Highway. In the 188-kilometer road, 29 bridges, 84 returns, 17 pedestrian bridges, two new lanes and the recovery of two that already existed were built.

Varela explained that the road work was initiated during the administration of former president Ricardo Martinelli. “This work was tendered and hired in the previous government, I do not want to talk about how it was tendered. It is not for me to say. What is up to me is to protect the works, the jobs and correct the administrative errors, because the other errors are corrected by justice,” said the president in El Peñón de Veraguas, along with Public Works minister Ramón Arosemena.

Martinelli congratulated the Panamanians through his Twitter account and indicated that the scope of these works is done thanks to the taxpayers. “The correct thing to do was to continue unlike Hospital City, which will cost millions more due to hatred,” the former president concluded.
