US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that his government is making "full possible efforts" to stop "the onslaught of illegal aliens" from crossing the border with Mexico, and warned them that, if they arrive, the US authorities will not accept their entry.
"People have to apply for asylum in Mexico first, and if they fail to do that, the US will turn them away. The courts are asking the US to do things that are not doable!" The president wrote on Twitter concerning the caravan of immigrants who left Honduras for US territory days ago.
"The caravans are a disgrace to the Democratic Party. Change the immigration laws NOW!" He added in another tweet.
The caravan of Honduran migrants that heads to the border with the United States arrived Sunday in the Mexican city of Tapachula while the immigration authorities urge them to regularize their legal status.
At least 2,000 members of the caravan who managed to overcome the migratory demands imposed by Mexico left the border crossing of Ciudad Hidalgo (Mexico) early for a trekking day of about 40 kilometers to Tapachula, where they will spend the night.
The objective of the caravan is to reach the border of Mexico with United States, implying a route of 2,000 kilometers to the northeast or almost 4,000 kilometers if people opt for the northwest route leading to Tijuana.
Several hundred Honduran migrants were waiting on the border bridge between Mexico and Guatemala, waiting to be assisted by Mexican migration, or in their case, attempting to enter Mexico illegally crossing the Suchiate River, the border between Mexico and Guatemala.
The Government of Mexico, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that around 4,500 is the total number of migrants who arrived at the southern border of the country.
