The 2019 general elections in Panama have a cost of 41.3 million dollars, according to the draft budget supported today by the Electoral Tribunal (TE) before the Parliament (AN).
The governing body of the elections reported Wednesday that it supported its budget project for 2019 before the Budget Committee of the AN, of 71 seats, the vast majority in the hands of the opposition.
According to official information, the budget of the TE amounts to 144.01 million dollars, of which 79.52 million dollars corresponds to operating expenses.
The Court budgeted 41.31 million dollars for the elections of May 2019, when more than 2.7 million Panamanians will be authorized to choose the new president and vice president, deputies of the AN and Central American Parliament (Parlacen), mayors and township representatives.
The public financing of the political parties reaches 17.94 million dollars, according to the budget project, while the investment line takes 5.22 million dollars.
During the support before the deputies, the magistrates of the governing body of the elections mentioned "the most relevant aspects of the budget for 2019, such as the line of operation, public financing to political parties, preparation for the next elections", among others , said an official statement.
"They also stressed that the recommended budget was approved in its entirety by the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), which ensures that the election year will be carried out without major inconveniences," the official information added.
