PANAMA CITY.- Cambio Democrático (CD), ex-president Ricardo Martinelli's party, said that they will increase their protest against the "political pursuit" that, it assures, is exercised by Juan Carlos Varela's Government against its members.

"Before Varela’s insistence" using the "General Attorney office as pursuit tool", the CD announced this Friday "the intensification of its days of protests to demand the cessation of his absurd political revenge, and the liberation of all political prisoners of his regime that, nevertheless, has not solved the needs of the Panamanians,” said the party in a communiqué.

Last Thursday and Friday, groups of CD sympathizers demonstrated at the General Attorney office doors, while the ex-secretary of Work and leader of the group, Alma Cortés, was investigated due to a case of supposed unjustified enrichment.

The Anticorruption Six District attorney's office dictated on Thursday a preventive detention to Cortés, but suspended the inquest until the next Wednesday, waiting the result of a few medical examinations practised the ex secretary due to the fact that she suffered a cardiac arrhythmia.

"President Varela gave the order to arrest Alma Cortés because he thinks that with his trojan horses are going to take the party. He is wrong," said the CD leader, Luis Eduardo Camacho. EFE
