The Panamanian president, Juan Carlos Varela, informed that after the Carnival dates, he will announce the new appointments for magistrates to the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ).
“We need to let the festivities pass, let things cool down a bit and in due time we will present the new candidates to the Cabinet and the National Assembly (AN),” Varela told local media.
He also stressed that for this new process, everything points to the fact that there will not be time to conduct the citizen’s consultation.
“I would actually not give so much time for that. I have to be very frank, the first time around I literally stuck to the State Pact for Justice and even so the population is not happy with the judicial system, that is a subject that has to be reviewed,” said the Panamanian leader.
Varela assured that Ana Lucrecia Tovar de Zarak and Zuleyka Moore “were two excellent candidates”. He attributed the rejection they got to “partisan politics.”
He also called for unity. “I feel that the political class should seek the unity of the country, seek to face the problems that affect the people together and not be attacking and offending each other,” said the Panamanian president.
These statements were offered by Varela to local media in the delivery of 110 kilometers of road in the province of Darién act, where more than $ 155 million were invested.
