The Secretary General of the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD), Pedro Miguel González, assured that the Judicial Investigation Directorate and the Public Prosecutor’s Office have information that corroborates the presumed participation of President Juan Carlos Varela in the Odebrecht plot. During a press conference at the headquarters of the PRD González said: “All the funds that came to the “Panameñista” party were concealed, trying to hide the origin and destination of those funds. Its final recipient was Juan Carlos Varela. There is enough evidence to open an investigation of citizen Juan Carlos Varela. No one is above the law. Not even a President.”

The deputy of the National Assembly also demanded that everything that tied the president with the Odebrecht company be forwarded to the Parliament that has the athority to investigate the Executive, “Attorney Kenia Porcell is obliged, according to article 1996 of the Judicial Code, to inform the National Assembly of the facts as well as the officials of the Judicial Investigation Directorate (DIJ)”.

González asked that Odebrecht be investigated from his arrival in Panama. He considers that the contracts made during the administrations of Martinelli and Varela have been “very superior” to those that were made in the period of Martín Torrijos.

He accused the Executive of wanting to impose two magistrates working in his favor to, according to him, “guarantee a majority in the Supreme Court of Justice and maintain control over the actions of the Public Ministry as he has been doing in recent months. It is a total mystery. Juan Carlos Varela will lead us to the end to tell us without further scrutiny or citizen opposition who his postulates are.”

The declarations of the Secretary General of the PRD were taken from the Facebook account of the political organization “PRDEsPanama”.

“Panameñismo” Reactions

The president of the “Panameñista” party, Jose Luis “Popi” Varela, responded through statements offered to the television channel TVN: “We have been transparent. We are sure that we will get off lightly. I invite anyone to do the investigations of the administrations.” Varela believes that the statements of the leader of the PRD are a “desperate” act compared to “the good news that the Government has given the people in recent days.”
