After the plenary of the National Assembly (AN) approved by majority, with 45 votes in favor, 1 against and 2 abstentions, the resolution that agreed to reshape the Credentials Committee, there are various reactions that have arisen both in the “Panameñista” party and in that of the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD).
The First Lady of Panama, Lorena Castillo de Varela, reacted to the political situation the nation is going through exclusively for TVN.
“This goes far beyond a Commission of Credentials, here there have been rash threats of summoning the president of the Republic, of impeaching him and of judging him; we are talking about a total destabilization of democracy in our country. Where there is not a single shred of evidence here or a single national or international account of absolutely nothing against Juan Carlos Varela,” said the First Lady of the Republic.
Lorena Castillo de Varela also referred to the Panamanian justice saying: “If we really want to clean up the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ), we have to name bold people. Here the position has been offered to other people and they do not accept it,” she said on TVN.
The PRD parliamentarian, Pedro Miguel González, the main promoter of the reconfiguration of the Credentials Committee, took a stand on the position of some “Panameñistas” not to recognize the decision of the plenary session. “Until yesterday, the person in charge of the Commission of Credentials was President Varela, when it’s reconfigured the majorities will do so," he said exclusively for TVN.
The Secretary General of the PRD also referred to the current situation of the Judicial Branch and the appointment of judges to the CSJ. “What Varela wants is to have messengers in the CSJ, to do what he wants in judicial cases ... Our justice is still a hobo justice due to the decisions of those who have governed the country. We do believe in judicial independence,” he said.
In light of the restructuring of the Commission of Credentials news, the “Panameñista” deputies Jorge Iván Arrocha, Luis Eduardo Quirós and Adolfo “Beby” Valderrama, presented a “warning of illegality” against the administrative act of the AN, considering that the President of the legislative Branch, Yanibel Abrego, overstepped her authority by calling the vote on the resolution.
The Board of Directors of the Legislative Branch must convene the plenary session for the election of the new members of the Credentials Committee, in order to have a proportionate representation of the political parties as mandated by the Panamanian Constitution.
