Hydroelectric project of Barro Blanco has been signed

PANAMA CITY.- Government and of Ngäbe Bugle authorities signed today on Monday the agreement of the hydroelectric project of Barro Blanco, in Chiriquí. 

The president Juan Carlos Varela and the vice-president and chancellor, Isabel Saint Malo, were present in the activity. 

Before the act, authorities talk to people of the community who opposed to the signature.

According to EFE, the Panamanian Government suspended the works of Barro Blanco last year and fined tue concessionary, Generating of the Isthmus S.A. (Genisa in spanish), for violations of the environmental law, at the time that it was installed a table of dialogue, with the support of the UNO, with the indigenous communities who rejects the project.

Genisa undertook in the last months with the authorization of the Government some works of maintenance as well as the filling test of the dam, which was paralyzed on June 9th to avoid the concerns about the lands of the region, as reported then the Vicepresidency.

The hydroelectric began to be constructed in 2011 and it plans to generate 28,56 megawatts, near 2 % of the installed capacity of the country.
