OAS (OEA) knows about the electoral process in Panamá.

The National Director of the Electoral Organization, Osman Valdés, and his team met with members of the Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS), who are in the country to learn more about the electoral process which culminates with the celebration of the General Elections this Sunday.

At the meeting, the electoral authorities spoke to the visitors about the stages of the electoral process, the work carried out by the National Commission on Electoral Reforms, the implementation of the new Electoral Law, the General Elections Plan (PLAGEL) and the operation of the institution that is guarantor and custodian of the identity of Panamanians.

They also talked about issues such as: accountability, electoral closure, campaign ceilings, informed vote, public and private financing, donations, contributions, causes of nullity for violating funding ceilings, among other issues.

The OAS (OEA) observers will hold meetings in the coming days with the government and electoral authorities, with representatives of the political parties and civil society, in order to learn their impressions of the electoral process. The Mission is composed of more than 60 experts and observers from 18 countries.

The specialists will make a substantive analysis on electoral organization and technology, political financing, electoral justice, voting abroad, political participation of women, political participation of indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples, as well as access to media and the use of social networks.

On the day of the election, the members of the Mission will visit polling stations in different parts of the country to observe the development of the day, from the opening of the polling stations to the scrutiny and the transmission of results. The Mission will present a preliminary report after the election party.
