In January 2019 Panama will receive the most important event of the last years in the Latin American Catholic community, when the World Youth Day (WYD) is celebrated in Panama, with the presence of Pope Francis and a large number of activities to be held within the capital of the canal country.
To carry out this act, the Government of Juan Carlos Varela began a structuring of the Metropolitan Basilica Cathedral, located in the Plaza de la Independencia in the Old Town of Panama City, at a cost that amounted to more than 12 million balboas, about $ 11.6 million that includes 10 tons of stones from Alicante and Catalonia (Spain).
