The pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic for the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD), Laurentino “Nito” Cortizo, accused the president, Juan Carlos Varela, of improvising during his administration. “Varela promised to improve security in the country, especially in San Miguelito, Colón and Chiriquí, but the reality is different. Insecurity continues to be the main problem throughout the country. This is a very profound crisis. We cannot continue improvising. We need a well-equipped, professional and motivated police,” Cortizo said in a speech with fellow party members.

Cortizo talked about health, education and food production issues questioning the Government’s actions, “Only 18 months are left. A good government does not promise what it cannot fulfill, it respects the Constitution and the laws, works hand in hand with the people’s power and advances in the decentralization process, defends the country’s interests and makes them be respected by all, efficiently executes and facilitates private investment, respects the separation of powers and listens to the people. We will have a good administration.”

The presidential pre-candidate referred to the magistrates issue and considered the selection process used by the Government non-consultative. He said that corruption has been the main reason for social inequality in Panama, “How is it possible that in the country of bribes and donations, the country of cost overrun and Odebrecht 777 thousand Panamanians live in poverty".

The speech of Cortizo generated reactions in members of the Executive Branch and leaders of the Panameñista party. They described the message as “demagogic”; they invited him to debate and to visit the delivered works. They also questioned the PRD’s Government management.
