The branches of public security were, this morning, under the orders of the Electoral Tribunal as part of the process of the elections to be held next Sunday. The president of the Republic. Juan Carlos Varela, handed over to the presiding magistrate of the Electoral Tribunal, Heriberto Araúz, Executive Decree No. 135 of April 25, 2019, by which the transfer of command is made official.
In this way, the National Police, the National Aeronaval Service (Senan), the National Frontier Service (Senafront) and the Institutional Protection Service (SPI) are under the orders of the Electoral Tribunal magistrates until the proclamation of the elected President of the Republic. Judge Araúz recalled that this is a measure that has been carried out since 1994 and that was copied from the neighboring country of Costa Rica and seeks to guarantee the transparency of the elections.
The act of transfer of the security forces took place in the main headquarters of the Electoral Tribunal attended by ministers of State, representatives of embassies in Panama and organized civil society Varela asked the presidential candidates to honor the national symbols and that the results will be known on Sunday night, while magistrate Araúz asked the citizens to go out and "vote well".
