Salerno plea bargained and evaded prison

Cristóbal Salerno was convicted of corruption and embezzlement as part of the case Cobranzas del Istmo. The penalty is a 48-month prison sentence; however, Salerno will not go to prison because the court will replace the 500-day fine with a $600 per day one, that is, about $300,000 payable in four months.

Through messages posted on the Prosecutor’s Office account, it was revealed that First Criminal Circuit Judge Agueda Renteria authorized a plea bargain.

Also, the judge ordered the seizure of $20 million. Moreover, the Prosecutor’s Office had frozen his bank accounts for about $35 million.

"With this decision, the work of the Anticorruption Prosecutors is materialized," said the legal department.
