The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nicole Wong held a meeting with the Director-General for Latin America and the Caribbean Affairs of Japan, Takahiro Nakamae, to discuss issues related to maritime connectivity between both nations in addition to the prevention of natural phenomena.

During the meeting, the Panamanian official expressed the interest President Juan Carlos Varela has in receiving the Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, on the Isthmus, according to an EFE publication. Apart from deepening the outreach with the Japanese, the visit would coincide with the initiation of the construction of line 3 of the Panama Metro that will be financed with public and private contributions from Japan.

It is expected that in April the first “Joint Panama-Japan Cooperation Commission” will be held.
