Argentina achieved the combination of results needed with effort but got into the second round of the Russia 2018 World Cup quarter finals, after beating Nigeria 2-1, while Croatia won to a surprised Iceland team 2-0, a last-minute goal was scored.
The Argentinian Team went out to find results and had time to corner Nigeria, until the 14th minute when Lionel Messi, deeply involved in the game from the beginning, got the party started, scoring his first goal.
The next minutes were agony for Nigeria, who could not find how to stop the continuous attacks of the Argentines, who could not overcome their rival that looked fully committed to the game.
Having forgiven them was a high cost, because in an African counterattack in the 51st minute Javier Mascherano caused a penalty that was well executed by Victor Moses to put the parity on the scoreboard. Argentina went from second to fourth place in Group D, with which they say goodbye to the World Cup.
The desperation forced Jorge Sampaoli to change his tactical drawing and took defender Nicolás Tagliafico to give Sergio "Kun" Agüero entrance in search of more offense. He did not get it that way. Quite the opposite, since it was Nigeria that generated the best chances and was about to deliver the death goal that would leave out any chance of qualifying for Messi and his team.
And just in desperation, in the 86th minute, Marco Rojo abandoned his defense activities to connect a center to the area and sentenced the match in favor of the South Americans.
That result was combined with Croatia's 2-1 win over Iceland to eliminate the small country that cheered the World Cup by opening with a game against Argentina.
It was a game of greater control for the Croats, already with the ticket in hand. It was not until the 53rd minute when Milan Badelj opened the scoring for Croatia.
Iceland did not surrender, and within its limitations it looked for a way until it found it in a penalty kick of its great star Gylfi Sigurdsson in the 76th minute to maintain its hopes of moving round in its world cup debut.
But Croatia finished sentencing with Ivan Perisic's goal in the 91st minute.
With these results, Croatia finishes in the first place of Group D, followed by Argentina, for which the Argentinian Teamwill face France on Saturday June 30 at 9 in the morning, while the Croatians will face Denmark on Sunday July 1 at one in the afternoon.
