Club Atlético Independiente, the only Panamanian representative in the Concachampions, found out who their rival of the round of 16 would be, while announcing the hiring of a new coach for the team.
La Chorrera, champion of the Clausura Tournament, will face the Toronto FC of the Major League Soccer (MLS), according to the draw made by the Concacaf, and in which Blas Pérez selected their rival from bowl number two.
It is no simple rival, since the Canadian team was runner-up in the last edition of the tournament, falling in the final and in the penalty shootout against Chivas de Guadalajara, so this year they are coming for retribution.
The Panamanian team must reinforce its lines and maintain the line of play that led it to be champion of the last Clausura tournament if it wants to overcome the Canadians and advance to the quarterfinals.
The round of 16 matches begin from February 19, with dates yet to be confirmed for all the matches
The rest of the eighth-round matches will be Santos-Marathon, Red Bulls / Timbers-Club Atlético Pantoja, Dynamo-Guastatoya, Toluca-Kansas City, Atlanta United-Herediano, Tigres-Saprissa and Monterrey-Alianza.
Shortly after knowing the fate of the CAI in the Concachampions, the club itself announced in a statement, the hiring of Venezuelan Francisco Perlo as coach of the team, replacing Leonardo Pipino.
Perlo, who has directed Carabobo FC in Venezuela in the past, as well as the Lions of America and Costa del Este, had been doing work in the smaller divisions of the club, which has decided to bet on the growth of that project by putting him in front of the first division team.
