Sweden became the twenty-ninth national team to secure its ticket to the 2018 FIFA World Cup, after eliminating Italy, a four-time world champion. Sweden asserted their 1-0 win in the first leg by drawing 0-0 in Milan.
With the qualification of Sweden there are only three available slots for the final phase, which will come out of the qualifiers that will be played by Ireland-Denmark, Peru-New Zealand and Australia-Honduras.
Buffon confirms his retirement
Veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon confirmed his retirement from the Italian team after a 0-0 draw with Sweden that saw the elimination of the “Azzurri” for the 2018 World Cup.
Buffon, unable to suppress the sobs, was the first to speak after the “absolute debacle” of Italy, he was in every World Cup since 1958, and in an interview with the national network “Rai Sport” admitted (as he cried) all his disappointment about the failed objective.
“I’m sorry, but not for me, for the team, because we have failed a purpose that was important at a social level, this is my only disappointment and not the one of finishing (the carrer with Italy.) Time passes for everyone and it is correct that it be so,” he declared.
The goalkeeper, 39, leaves the national team with the absolute record of matches (174) and thanked the teammates with whom he shared the most important moments of his career.
“The sport teaches how to lose as a group and win as a group, to share joys and sorrows, merits and demerits, and the coach has the same guilt that we have,” he said.
Asked about what future he sees for Italian football, Buffon said that the “Azzurri” have always managed to “get up after the ugliest falls” and that is why he is optimistic.
