Jamaican Weyinmi Rose and American Derek Reese will reinforce Leones de Ponce in the 2019 edition of the FIBA Americas League, the team's organization said today.
It will be the third time that Rose plays with the Lions, while Reese will play for the second time, the club said in a press release.
Both will play with the Lions in the first round of Group D, from February 8 to 10, at the Juan "Pachín" Vicéns Auditorium in Ponce, a municipality in the south of Puerto Rico.
The southern squad will host the two-time champions of the tournament in 2016 and 2017, Guaros de Lara from Venezuela; the champions of the Panamanian league, University of Panama; and the champions of the National Superior Basketball (BSN) of Puerto Rico, Capitanes de Arecibo.
Rose averaged 16.3 points, 4.3 assists and 1.7 rebounds in three games with the Lions, during the team's first appearance in the continental tournament, in 2014.
That same year he played with the team in the BSN.
The technical assistant of the Lions, Xavier Aponte, said in the press release that Rose is a player "very deep in the perimeter", and that "he has a lot of power to create his own shots and also for his teammates".
"He's going to help us in quantity, especially because he gives us a different offense to Vassallo's when he covers his position", Aponte said of Puerto Rican forward Ángel Daniel Vassallo.
For the upcoming tournament, the Ponce administration has also confirmed the participation of Vassallo, former international Carlos Arroyo, Víctor Liz, Adrián Uter, Nick Minnerath, Cliff Durán and Alvin Cruz.
